Bella Rayne

December 27th, 2019

I asked Bella where she would like to talk:

Deep in the woods in a remote place in Idaho that is hidden and protected I meet up with Laura for our interview. What she doesn’t know is that we haven’t quite reached our destination. I giggle to myself thinking how surprised she will be when we reach our interview place. When she reaches me I grab her hand and pull a portal to another realm. She looks at me with wonder on her face. I can tell she wants to ask me questions but she is taking in all the beauty of the portal and it’s surroundings. We came out on the other side of the portal to a place filled with flowers in all colors of the rainbow from light to dark. The trees were so tall you would think giants tended them. On the path there are fruit trees and the most delicious smells in the air from strawberry preserves to baked apple pie. The sky is brilliant blue with three moons shadowing the sky.

I bring her to the center of a labyrinth where Gaia has prepared a place for us to sit and talk. Our interview is about to begin when I realize she is hungry. With the snap of my fingers a feast fit for goddesses appears before us. Food an drink of all kinds. All sorts of fruit and cheese platters and various wines. Goodies that take us back to our childhood and conjures up incredible memories from our past that remind us of more fun times. The feast tastes and smells like ambrosia. We finish our meal with a glass of champagne and delectable chocolates. Time for the interview to begin.

Laura Mae: What inspired you to enter the world of writing?

Bella Rayne: I have always loved to read. When I wrote my first book I did not set out to write a book. It flowed out of me and before I knew it I was done. I thought about publishing it but I didn’t. My husband and sons and a dear friend encouraged me to get it published. They kept telling me to go for it. I held on to that book for nine years before I did anything with it. I am glad I listened to them.

L: How long have you been writing for?

B: I started writing in journals a long time ago. Then the poetry came forward and fun little stories. Then in 2009 an idea for a novel came to me. I started writing it and within a couple of months it was finished. There is something about the feeling of paper under your hands as paper meets ink and that creativity flowing out of you through the mediums you choose to use.

L: What are you currently working on?

B: My first book Darkest Betrayals is more mystery and suspense. Although there is some paranormal aspects to it. I fell in love with my characters in my first book. I just finished up my second book and I am hopelessly in love with some of the characters. It is definitely a lot more fantasy, paranormal, and magick with some mystery and thrills. Some parts of it will be similar to the interview setting that I created. My main character Dabney is quite an enigma. She has things unfolding under the surface that she never knew about herself. There is a point that my main character went rogue as I was writing her. It was fascinating to watch her evolve. There were moments  in writing different scenes where she wanted nothing but Metallica music and then other parts she wanted ABBA. I am so excited for my readers to meet her and the rest of the gang.

This is actually the first book in a series of three possibly more. The thing I love about these stories is they can stand alone without the other books.

Watch my website for the release of my second book!

L: Are there any books or authors who inspire your work?

B: Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlocks Holmes is my favorite. Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick, Jayne Castle; Nora Roberts, J.D. Robb; Iris Johansen.

L: What has been the most challenging for you so far?

B: Believing that I was making the right decision in putting my work out there for the world to read.

L: Besides writing, what is it you like to do?

B: I love to cook, paint, draw, and write poetry. I love to sing and dance and be as goofy as I want to be.

L: What would you say is your favorite book or series of all time? Why?

B: There are way too many books that have been written for me to only have one favorite. I love Sherlock Holmes because of his deductive reasoning. The books by Amanda Quick, Jayne Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle which are by the same person. I love the strong female roles and the strong supportive male roles in her books. She brings an aspect of the paranormal through her Arcane Society that are fantastic. Iris Johansen’s Eve Duncan series is mind blowing. Eve Duncan is talented, vulnerable and a strength and grit that is admirable.

L: Are there any regrets you have or anything you wish you knew sooner?

B: I wish I had known about sharing my up and coming book on Twitter. I didn’t know about that until it had already come out.

L: In a brief statement, have you self-published or traditionally published? What was your experience?

B: I am a self-published author. My experience has been a pretty great one and I have had some challenges just like other authors. I have to fight for myself and my book and hope that I have enough supporters to help me along the way. As a self-published author I love that I maintain my rights to my book.

L: What are you currently reading?

B: I am beta reading a book for a friend of mine.

L: What genre do you read?

B: Mysteries, suspense, paranormal, romance, magic, self-help if that is a genre. I read mostly fiction.

L: What does a typical day of writing look like for you? Any rituals or ‘must-haves’?

B: I don’t write every day. When I do write I just make sure I have time to put toward my writing. I always have paper available so I can jot any ideas that come to me while I am writing something else. I keep a notebook with all my sticky notes in it so I can refer back to them and keep everything straight in my book. I like to have coffee and chocolate filled Oreo cookies when I am writing.

L: Any songs or type of music you need to listen to when you write?

B: I don’t necessarily have to listen to music when I am writing. I tend to write in silence. This last book I think I listened to SOS by Abba twenty times writing a section of my book. My MC then decided Eminem and Metallica were what she wanted. It was fantastic!

L: What’s a word or phrase that people say that always irritates you?

B: “Oh Well!”

L: Where would you say you get most of your inspiration?

B: Life itself and my dreams. Watching other movies and reading books expands our minds even more. Hurt and pain can be quite inspirational.

L: For aspiring writers out there, what would be the best advice you want them to know?

B: Write for your own pleasure first. I have gotten so much enjoyment out of my first book. Write all of your ideas down because they will blossom into even bigger and better ideas. Enjoy yourself!

Bella Rayne is a pen name I chose when I decided to publish my first book Darkest Betrayals. I was born in a small town of about ten thousand people in Idaho. I love mysteries, suspense, metaphysical, paranormal and the supernatural. My love of Sherlock Holmes and Nancy Drew set me on an incredible path to loving mysteries and writing about them. I love to watch Murder She Wrote and most other mysteries. My Favorite Sherlock Holmes was played by Jeremy Brett. I do love Robert Downey Jr’s version as well. I fell in love with Masterpiece Mystery theatre on PBS when I was younger.
I love spending time with Gaia and the fairies being as connected as I possibly can be. The most important thing to me are my children and spending time with them. I love to cook and paint. Music, singing and dancing are what make me feel at home in my heart. I love to draw and write poetry.

You can find Bella on Twitter, Amazon and Goodreads.
