I asked Jenee where she would like to interview:
“The coffee shop was dark as I entered. Unsure of why Laura asked to meet here. I spot a flashlight beam in the ceiling as feel my way around the darkened shop. Once I reach the beam, I see her sitting here waiting on me. There is a sword on the table and she whisperers. “You can’t talk too loud, incase there are creepers in the shadows.”
Laura Mae: Hello Jenee, how has your day been today?
Jenee Robinson: Sleepless and crazy, you?
L: Oh no! Mines been pretty good, thank you for asking! Have you been able to get any writing done, and also, are you doing NaNoWriMo this year?
J: Yes on both, I got 785 words in this morning while chasing my 3 year old, my 1 year old niece and keeping my 3 month old niece happy. This is my first NaNoWriMo.
L: That’s great! It’s my first year as well! It’s never easy getting things done with kids around, but you seem to manage. Very awesome! What is you are working on, then?
J: I have three projects in the works. One is book 3 of the Creeper Saga, Redemption of the Fae. The other two are anthology stories, one for December and the other for Valentines Day. Congratulations on doing NaNoWriMo.
L: Wow! Lot’s of stuff going on! Thank you! I know Redemption of the Fae is the third book, but could you tell me a little but about it, or what the series is about?
J: Well, in book one my MC Liauna is just your average almost 20 year old, surviving the apocalypse with her family and neighbors. On a routine supply run, she is cornered by creepers aka zombies, when she’s saved by three glorious men. She learns there is more to world then it seems. She learns that’s her father is not her biological father and that her bio dad is a Fae King. Also her three new friends are not only a Fae, Hybrid – half vamp/half human and a shifter but they are her soulmates as well. She goes to the Fae Realm with her bio dad and Evans, the asshole Fae warrior and her fiancée. To find out more about the evil king of the south Deezy who unleashed the curse on the human realm. That’s just book one.
L: That sounds awesome! You think it’s your typical zombie apocalypse, then it flips on you and becomes a fantasy novel. How did you come up with this concept?
J: Honestly, I love all things supernatural and dystopian so I thought why not combine them, I haven’t seen it done.
L: I really love that Jenee. And you’re right! I don’t think I’ve seen it either! How long have you been working on this awesome series?
J: I started it last October or November. They are only novella length as I wanted to test the water and see if people liked my writing.
L: Oh wow! I know what you mean. That’s till amazing, though! Congrats on that! Jenee, do you have any particular author influences that made you want to be a writer?
J: Not really, I’ve always loved writing and did poetry and short stories in high school. I didn’t decided to write again until I started talking with AK Koonce. She is a true gift and great friend. She helped me every step of the way and is still a big help to me now.
L: Lovely! We all need people like that in our lives, and it’s better when we can actually talk to them! I love how supportive the writing community is.
J: I do too! It’s amazing to find all these people to support you and push you to follow your dream.
L: Exactly! So since you have 2, almost 3 books out in such a short time, do you have a writing ritual or anything you have to have before you sit down and write?
J: Oh I also have two short stories in anthologies out and more releasing this month. I try and write at nap time for my three year old, or at night when my youngest two are in bed.
L: Dedication! Would you consider yourself a panster or a plotter?
J: Well I usually have a general idea of where I want the story to go, but sometimes the characters don’t agree.
L: Very true. They have a way of writing it for you sometimes. Haha! Do you have a favorite part of the writing process?
J: Just letting the words flow, no distractions. I love to see where they decide to take me. That’s usually when I get a higher word count.
L: Same! That’s what happening to me right now for NaNo. Do you have a least favorite?
J: Editing, it seems to take longer then writing.
L: Omg, right?! It’s the worst. Haha! What about writing tropes? Do you have a favorite or least favorite?
J: Well, you’ve stumped me. I had to google tropes lol. I try and just write what I’d like to read. I also try and stay away from characteristics I don’t like in books.
L: Haha! Some people have very strong opinion on writing tropes, so I love asking it. But yes, with every book there is usually one thing you won’t like about it. That’s okay though! So, since you have published a couple of books now, is there anything you wish you would have known before you did it, or any regrets?
J: I think I would’ve researched editors more, I had one lined up and do to illness couldn’t do it. So I had to find one in a rush and she did wonderful, but wasn’t given the amount of time needed to get all the mistakes.
L: Oh yeah, editors are super important. I’m glad it worked out in the end. But I guess sometimes we learn things the hard way. Alright, enough about writing for a second. What do you like to do in your spare time, Jenee?
J: Writing. That’s what I do in my spare time. I’m a stay at home mom of three girls and also baby sit my nieces for my sister.
L: Love the dedication! Writing can be a serve as many different outlets. Whether it’s for a job, or helps to get away. I understand that totally! Alight, last question! Please send us off with some of your best writing wisdom to aspiring authors out there.
J: Always keep fighting – Jared Padalecki. Just don’t give up, you are good enough. Write the words and people will read them. Also fight the creepers and find your own magic.
L: Love that so much! Thank you so much for talking with me today, Jenee! It’s been such a pleasure!
J: Thank you so much! Sorry if my answers were too short. This is the first interview I’ve ever done. Thanks for having me.
L: Not at all! I’m glad to be your first!
